Tom Gentzsch schlägt nicht das erste Mal auf der Anlage in Meerbusch auf. Der 19-jährige spricht im Interview mit den Tennisproleten über seine Beziehung zu den Turnieren in Meerbusch, seinen ersten Profititel im letzten Jahr und wie der Alltag eines Tennisprofis aussieht.
Tom, Du bist nicht zum ersten Mal in Meerbusch bei einem Turnier dabei. Welche Bedeutung haben für Dich die Turniere in Meerbusch?
Die Turniere in Meerbusch bedeuten mir sehr viel! Ich habe dort mein erstes ITF-Turnier und auch mein erstes Match auf der Challenger-Tour gespielt. Vielen Dank an Turnierdirektor Marc Raffel, dass er mir mit der Wildcard diese Chance ermöglicht hat. Natürlich finde ich es auch gut, dass die Wege für mich kurz sind. Meine Eltern können bei den Matches zuschauen, darauf freue ich mich immer sehr. Das ist nicht alltäglich. Auch für mich ist das alles entspannter. Ich wohne 20 Minuten von der Anlage entfernt, muss nicht ins Hotel, kann alles von zu Hause aus machen.
Was war in Deiner Karriere bisher das schönste Erlebnis?
Ganz klar mein erster Profititel auf der ITF Tour in Trier im letzten Jahr. Meine ganze Familie war vor Ort. Meine Eltern und mein großer Bruder haben mich ans Tennis herangeführt. Es war daher sehr schön, dass alle dabei waren.
Hat sich etwas mit dem Titel für Dich persönlich verändert?
Auf jeden Fall. Vor dem Turnier bin ich immer in die Turniere reingegangen und wusste, ich kann gegen viele gewinnen. Mein Ziel war es vorher immer ein oder zwei Runden zu gewinnen. Das Turnier gewonnen zu haben, hat mir nochmal einen Kick gegeben. Ich habe seitdem immer wieder bessere Spieler geschlagen.
Du bist aktuell in der Weltrangliste um Platz 800 platziert. Was ist für das laufende Jahr Dein Ziel?
Mein Ziel ist es unter die Top 500 zu kommen, um im nächsten Jahr auf der Challenger-Tour zu spielen und bei ITF-Turnieren gesetzt zu sein. Die Challenger Tour ist finanziell lukrativer, das ist natürlich auch persönlich ein Vorteil.
Was ist für Dich der große Unterschied zwischen der Challenger und der ITF Tour?
Es gibt mehr junge gute Spieler auf der ITF Tour, die sich auf die Challenger-Tour spielen wollen. Das ist ein harter Weg. Es gibt einen Punkt für einen Sieg im Hauptfeld beim ITF-Turnier. Auf Challenger-Ebene gibt es bereits in der Qualifikation mehr Punkte. Daher ist natürlich auf der ITF Tour das Niveau nicht so konzentriert, wie auf Challenger Ebene. Trotzdem kann auch auf der Ebene der ITF Tour jeder jeden schlagen. Die können schon alle gut spielen.
Wie sieht aktuell Dein Trainingsalltag aus?
Zuhause habe ich einen festen Coach. In Mühlheim an der Ruhr trainiere ich mit einer Gruppe von sechs, sieben weiteren Spielern täglich nach einem festen Ablauf. Auf den Turnieren versuche ich immer jemanden mitzunehmen, damit jemand meine Matches sieht und ich mich verbessern kann. Manchmal kommt auch mein Vater mit. Beim Turnier ist das Training mehr punkteorientiert. Schnelligkeit und Reaktion stehen da mehr im Fokus.
Du bist noch ein junger Tennisprofi. Gab es für Dich in der Jugend einen besonderen Moment, der zum Entschluss Tennisprofi beigetragen hat?
Gab es so in der Form nicht. Mein Bruder hat in der Jugend gut gespielt. Bis ich 13 Jahre alt war, habe ich kaum Turniere gespielt und auch nicht so viel trainiert. Erst dann entwickelte sich das langsam.
Gibt es bei Dir etwas, woran Du aktuell arbeitest und worauf die Fans in dieser Woche in Meerbusch achten sollen?
Ich habe im vergangenen Jahr viel an der Rückhand gearbeitet. Ansonsten habe ich in letzter Zeit viele Turniere gespielt, da gibt es in den einzelnen Matches immer etwas, was mit nicht so gefällt.
Wenn ich mir aus Vorhand, Rückhand, Aufschlag und Volley vier verschiedene Spieler aussuchen dürfte, dann wären das?
Bei der Vorhand würde ich meine eigene nehmen, den Serve würde ich von Kyrgios übernehmen, die Rückhand von Alexander Zverev und die Volleys von Roger Federer.
Was bringt Dich im Match auf die Palme?
Meistens rege ich mich über mich selbst auf. Über einfache, blöde Fehler, die vermeidbar sind. Weniger über den Gegner.
Wie verbringst Du Deine Zeit abseits des Platzes?
Fußball und Basketball schaue ich gerne. Ich unternehme auch gerne etwas mit Freunden. Neben den Turnieren und dem Training bleibt insgesamt wenig Zeit für andere Aktivitäten.
Tennisprofi zu sein bedeutet für mich?
Ich finde es ist ein unfassbar geiler Job. Für mich wäre es nichts im Büro zu sitzen oder zu studieren. Ich finde es großartig in anderen Ländern unterwegs zu sein und Menschen kennen zulernen.
